Vindelis 7873 has met on Portland since 1963. We’re one of forty-nine lodges across the Province of Dorset, and proud to be part of the tradition that runs through this island.
What makes us us is our membership. Men in their twenties sit alongside men in their nineties. Some come from a military background — Portland’s history makes that natural — and the lodge also draws from the prisons and probation service, the NHS, Dorset Council, education, trades, business and retirement. There’s no “type” of Freemason here. Just people who want to be part of something good.

Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest fraternal organisations — a community of men who meet to support each other’s character, raise money for good causes, and enjoy each other’s company.
Held in our temple — formal, structured, rooted in centuries of tradition. This is where ceremonies take place: welcoming new members, marking progressions, conducting lodge business. Serious work, and where the character of Freemasonry comes alive.
Dinner together — proper food, conversation, toasts, sometimes a guest speaker. It’s where the friendships actually get built. New members tell us this is the part that surprises them: how quickly it feels like home.
Four times a year we put on events that bring partners, friends and family in — from summer gatherings on Portland to seasonal dinners. The lodge is a community, not just a meeting.
Giving runs through everything we do. Local causes, provincial appeals and national Masonic charities all benefit from what the lodge raises year on year.

You’re welcome at a social event before committing — meet some members and see how we are with one another.
Two existing members propose and second you, and your application goes to the lodge for consideration.
Your initiation begins a journey through three degrees — ceremonies that mark your progress. We explain everything as you go. You’re never on your own.
You don’t need to know a Freemason. You just need to be curious enough to ask.
